“Box Office Battle” is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
Sony’s (SONY) “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” won this weekend at the summer box office with a $56M domestic opening and a $104.6M global start. Two years since the infamous Oscars slap, Will Smith appears to finally be making a career comeback. The movie that reunites Smith and Martin Lawrence earned an A- CinemaScore.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: “The Garfield Movie,” another Sony title, placed number 2 with $10M for a global tally of almost $200M. Behind it was John Krasinski and Paramount’s (PARA) “IF” with an estimated $8M. Warner Bros. (WBD) and Ishana Night Shyamalan’s “The Watchers” debuted at number 4 with $7M. Rounding out the top five, 20th Century and Disney (DIS) “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” grossed an estimated $5.4M as it reached nearly $360M globally.
